Newark and Trenton from New York City or Philadelphia

New Jersey is within easy reach of New York City and Philadelphia, and has excellent road and public transport connections from Newark International Airport.

New Jersey commuters daily cross the Hudson River to New York City or the Delaware to Philadelphia. The closeness to these two major cities provides excellent public transport connections, making New Jersey one of the most accessible states in the US.

Local transit systems connect New York with northern New Jersey and Philadelphia with the southern end of the state.

Airports

Newark International Airport

New York City’s second airport, across the state line in New Jersey, is a far more practical alternative to JFK for visitors to New Jersey. The Airtrain provides a connection with Newark and Newark Liberty International Airport Train Station, where connections can be made with NJ Transit and Amtrak trains.

Philadelphia International Airport

Philadelphia is the nearest international airport to southern New Jersey. The airport is 7 miles away from downtown Philadelphia, linked by a fast and regular train service. Trains run every 30 minutes between 5am and midnight, the journey takes just over 20 minutes and costs $5.50. From downtown Philadelphia, connections to New Jersey are available.

Train

Amtrak services between New York and Philadelphia pass through New Jersey. Stops include Newark Penn, Newark Airport and Trenton and there is a Thruway bus connection between Philadelphia and Atlantic City. Thruway is, by law, only available to holders of a valid rail ticket. The Amtrak service also provides a direct link with other cities, including Washington, Baltimore, Chicago and Boston.

Bus

Greyhound provides a number of direct links, including Newark to Baltimore and Washington and New York to Atlantic City.

Getting from New York City

Ten lines link New York City with New Jersey, some go directly in to Penn Station, while others require a change of train at Secaucus Junction. Connections with the PATH system can be made at Hoboken Terminal.

PATH Phone 1-800-234-7284

The PATH rapid transit system provides a quick link between Manhattan and New Jersey. Trains depart from Midtown Manhattan (33rd Street) and the World Trade Center at regular intervals to Hoboken and downtown Newark Penn Station.

Getting from Philadelphia

A service runs approximately every 2 hours between Philadelphia (30th Street) and Atlantic City, average journey time is just over 90 minutes.

SEPTA run regional rail links between Philadelphia and various stations in New Jersey, including Trenton where connections can be made with the New Jersey Transit.

PATCO Phone 1 856-772-6900

PATCO links downtown Philadelphia with Camden and Lindenwold in New Jersey. The regular service takes 25 minutes to cover the 14-mile journey.
